COSMIC MESSAGE
The south pole of Mars, captured by the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft in September 2001. The image shows the 400-kilometer wide polar cap during the Martian southern hemisphere spring. The cap, made mostly of frozen carbon dioxide and some water ice, begins to shrink as the ice sublimates directly into gas during this season.
