The Local Interstellar Cloud

NASA APOD · Linda Huff (American Scientist), Priscilla Frisch (U. Chicago)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Our Sun is moving through a wisp of gas, a cloud of hydrogen and helium about 30 light years across. This is the Local Interstellar Cloud, and it is so thin that its atoms are farther apart than the best vacuum we can make on Earth. The cloud itself is moving, and in about 20,000 years our Solar System will emerge from it. This map shows where it is, within 10 light years of us.
