Reflection Nebula M78

NASA APOD · AAO
COSMIC MESSAGE

Messier 78 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion, about 1,600 light-years from Earth. It's illuminated by the light of several bright blue stars that formed within it. The dust in the nebula scatters the starlight, giving it a characteristic blue glow. This same scattering process makes Earth's sky appear blue.
