A Radio Vista of Cygnus
NASA APOD · Jayanne English
COSMIC MESSAGE
This radio image provides a tremendous vista toward the constellation of Cygnus, covering about 10 degrees across the sky. It highlights shells of ancient supernovas, cocoons surrounding newborn stars, and distant quasars. This is a small part of the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey. Diffuse bands of ionized gas flow through a dominating region of star formation, located about 6000 light-years away. Two prominent supernova shells, including the brown globule, are visible.
