A Gamma Ray Burst - Supernova Connection

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

New evidence suggests a connection between gamma-ray bursts and supernovae. Two weeks ago, the HETE satellite detected gamma-ray burst GRB030329. Hours later, an exceptionally bright afterglow was observed in visible light. This afterglow set a record for the closest measured distance at redshift 0.17, allowing unprecedented study of its evolution.
