NGC 1068 and the X-Ray Flashlight

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Spiral galaxy NGC 1068 might be hiding a powerful central X-ray source, likely a supermassive black hole. The X-rays are not directly visible to us, but are scattered into our line of sight by a dense torus of material surrounding the black hole. This creates an appearance similar to a flashlight held under the chin.
