An Unusual Globule in IC 1396

NASA APOD · Jean-Charles Cuillandre
COSMIC MESSAGE

IC 1396, also known as the Elephant's Trunk Nebula, is a star-forming region in Cepheus. This image shows a dark cometary globule, a dense cloud of gas and dust. A bright young star, located off-frame, emits energetic light that erodes the dust in this globule. Jets and particle winds from this star also push away the surrounding gas and dust, shaping these cosmic structures.
