Sunspot region AR 10486, almost out of view on the Sun's western edge, produced an intense solar flare and coronal mass ejection. The flare, seen here in extreme ultraviolet from the SOHO spacecraft's EIT camera, was an X-class event. It saturated the camera's pixels and detectors on other satellites.
