Jaipur Observatory Sundial

NASA APOD · Tim Feresten
COSMIC MESSAGE

This sundial, part of the Jaipur Observatory in India, aligns with the North Celestial Pole. Built in the eighteenth century by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the architecture itself allows for astronomical measurements. This 90-foot-high stairway acts as a shadow caster, or gnomon, for what may be the largest sundial in the world.
