The Viking 2 Orbiter captured this image of Phobos, Mars's diminutive moon, in 1977. Phobos is seen against the backdrop of the large shield volcano Ascraeus Mons. The orbiter was about 8,000 miles above the volcano, with Phobos 5,000 miles below the orbiter.
