A Hole Punch Cloud Over Alabama
NASA APOD · Joel Knain
COSMIC MESSAGE
A hole-punch cloud forms when an airplane flies through a cloud deck that is below freezing. The plane's propellers or wings cause the air to expand and cool, forming ice crystals that grow and fall out. This creates a circular or linear hole in the cloud, often with virga, falling ice crystals, beneath it. This cloud formed over Mobile, Alabama.
