Jupiter's Rings Revealed
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Jupiter has rings, discovered in 1979 by Voyager 1. Their origin remained a mystery until data from the Galileo spacecraft, which orbited Jupiter from 1995 to 2003, confirmed they were created by meteoroid impacts on small nearby moons. When a meteoroid strikes a moon like Adrastea, it vaporizes and explodes, sending dirt and dust into Jovian orbit.
