COSMIC MESSAGE

The Trifid Nebula, also known as M20, is an easy find in Sagittarius with a small telescope. Visible light shows the nebula divided into three parts by dark, obscuring dust lanes. This infrared image from the Spitzer Space Telescope, however, reveals filaments of luminous gas and newborn stars. Astronomers used this data to count newborn and embryonic stars hidden from visible light.
