The Southern Cross, or Crux, and stars of the constellation Centaurus are visible above Mauna Loa, Earth's largest volcano. This view is from a location south of about 25 degrees north latitude, where the Southern Cross can be seen near the horizon. The long axis of this compact constellation of bright stars points towards the southern celestial pole.
