In 1984, astronaut Bruce McCandless II achieved an unprecedented feat, floating untethered in space about 100 meters from the Space Shuttle Challenger. He used a Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) to propel himself with jets of nitrogen. This historic spacewalk, shared with fellow astronaut Robert Stewart, marked a new era in human exploration beyond the confines of a spacecraft.
