M51: Cosmic Whirlpool

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, is the 51st entry in Charles Messier's catalog. It is a grand spiral, with arms and dust lanes that sweep in front of its companion galaxy, NGC 5195. You can find it by following the handle of the Big Dipper to the last bright star, then sliding your telescope a little south and west. This is a classic example of interacting galaxies.
