The Trifid Nebula from CFHT

NASA APOD · Jean-Charles Cuillandre
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Trifid Nebula, also known as M20, is a region of star formation visible in Sagittarius. High-energy starlight striking interstellar hydrogen gas creates the red-glowing gas. Dark dust filaments, formed in the atmospheres of cool giant stars and from supernova debris, lace through M20. This nebula shows both beauty and the chaos of star birth.
