Short Gamma-Ray Bursts Localized

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

What causes gamma-ray bursts? These are the most energetic explosions in the cosmos, and we are still working to understand them. Short duration bursts, like the one imaged here, are thought to be caused by the merger of two neutron stars. The Swift satellite helped localize this particular burst, providing clues to its origin.
