NASA APOD · Gemini Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE
These two supernova remnants, DEM L316, sit in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Astronomers used the 8-meter Gemini Telescope in Chile and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory to study them. The smaller shell is from a Type Ia supernova, where a white dwarf star exploded.
