The Caloris basin on Mercury is one of the largest impact basins in the Solar System, spanning about 1,500 kilometers. This enhanced color mosaic from the MESSENGER spacecraft shows the basin in yellowish hues. The impact that created it happened early in the Solar System's history. Orange splotches around its perimeter are thought to be volcanic vents.
