NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 1316 is a large elliptical galaxy that began to consume a smaller spiral galaxy, NGC 1317, about 100 million years ago. Astronomers found evidence for this event in the dark dust lanes, characteristic of a spiral galaxy, and faint swirls of stars and gas visible in this deep image. The unusually small globular clusters remain a mystery.
