NGC 253 is one of the brightest spiral galaxies in the sky, located about 13 million light-years away. It is the largest member of the Sculptor Group of galaxies, a neighbor to our local galaxy group. This close-up view, based on Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys data, shows filaments of dust, interstellar gas, and individual stars. The galaxy is seen nearly edge-on.
