The 60-inch Reflector

NASA APOD · Wally Pacholka
COSMIC MESSAGE

On December 13, 1908, the 60-inch diameter reflecting telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory was first tested on the stars. This instrument became the first successful large reflecting telescope. It demonstrated a scalable design using a mirror to gather faint starlight, which was easier to support than a large lens. This design became the blueprint for all larger, modern telescopes.
