Unusual Light Pillars Over Latvia

NASA APOD · Aigar Truhin
COSMIC MESSAGE

Strange columns of light appear over a town in Latvia, fanning out at the top. These light pillars form when falling ice crystals reflect bright ground lights. While the columns themselves are understood, the reason for their fanning shape at the top is still a subject of scientific discussion. This image was captured with a standard digital camera in Sigulda.
