Fox Fur, a Unicorn, and a Christmas Tree

NASA APOD · R Jay Gabany
COSMIC MESSAGE

This colorful skyscape in Monoceros, the Unicorn, is a star-forming region cataloged as NGC 2264. It is about 2,700 light-years away. Clouds of glowing hydrogen gas mix with dark interstellar dust, creating reddish emission nebulae excited by new stars. Where dust clouds are near hot, young stars, they reflect starlight, forming blue reflection nebulae.
