Messier Craters in Stereo

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Astronomer Charles Messier cataloged many star clusters and nebulae. Two large craters on the Moon also bear his name. Messier and Messier A, in the dark Mare Fecunditatis, are elongated, not round. This shape suggests they were formed by an object hitting the Moon at a very shallow angle.
