Arp 286: Trio in Virgo

NASA APOD · Stephen Leshin
COSMIC MESSAGE

Arp 286 is a trio of interacting galaxies located almost 90 million light-years away in Virgo. The largest, NGC 5566, is an enormous spiral galaxy about 150,000 light-years across, predominantly yellow with sweeping arms. Just below it is the smaller, blue NGC 5560, and to its right is the even smaller NGC 559. Two foreground Milky Way stars, visible on the left, echo the galaxies' colors.
