A Sun Halo Beyond Stockholm
Sometimes the Sun appears to be viewed through a giant lens, but it's actually millions of tiny ones. This phenomenon, called a sun halo, is created by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. These small, flat, six-sided crystals flutter to the ground, often with their faces parallel to the ground. When an observer is in the same plane as many of these falling crystals near sunrise or sunset, the crystals refract the sunlight, creating the halo effect visible here over Stockholm.
In tropical astrology, 10 JAN 2011 falls under Capricorn (♑). The sign's window runs from 12-22 through 01-19. Capricorn is the dimmest zodiac constellation, but rich in deep-sky objects south of the celestial equator. The Sun was crossing this region of the sky on 10 JAN 2011.
