A Sun Pillar Over Ontario

COSMIC MESSAGE
This sun pillar, photographed over Ontario, Canada, is a stunning atmospheric optical effect. It forms when flat, six-sided ice crystals fall from high-level clouds and orient themselves nearly flat. These crystals reflect sunlight upwards, creating a column of light that appears to rise from the Sun.
