Comet Lemmon near the South Celestial Pole

NASA APOD · Barden Ridge Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Lemmon, discovered as part of the Mount Lemmon Survey, is currently sweeping through southern skies. It displays a stunning lime green coma and a faint, divided tail in this telescopic image from Australia. The greenish tint comes from diatomic C2 gas in the coma fluorescing in sunlight, making it brighter than expected.
