Cometary Globules

COSMIC MESSAGE

These bright-rimmed, flowing shapes are called cometary globules. They are made of interstellar gas and dust, and are about 1,300 light-years distant. Ultraviolet light from nearby hot stars has shaped the globules and ionized their bright rims. They stream away from the Vela supernova remnant, which may have influenced their swept-back shapes.
