NGC 6240: Merging Galaxies
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
NGC 6240 is a pair of merging galaxies about 400 million light-years away in Ophiuchus. This cosmic catastrophe is in its final stages, with the galaxies spewing distorted tidal tails of stars, gas, and dust. The collision also triggers rapid bursts of star formation. Eventually, the two supermassive black holes in their cores will combine, forming a single, more massive black hole, leaving behind one large galaxy.
