M64: The Black Eye Galaxy

NASA APOD · Michael Miller
COSMIC MESSAGE

Messier 64, also known as the Black Eye Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy about 17 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. Its heavy-lidded appearance comes from enormous dust clouds obscuring the near side of its central region. These dust clouds are laced with the reddish glow of hydrogen, giving it a "red eye" appearance in this colorful image.
