Comet PanSTARRS and a Crescent Moon

NASA APOD · Yuri Beletsky (Las Campanas Observatory, Carnegie Institution)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet C/2014 Q1 PanSTARRS brightened quickly and unexpectedly after rounding the Sun on July 6. It shed a significant amount of gas and dust, making it visible to the unaided eye from some locations just after sunset. This image shows the comet and a crescent moon. Its close approach to Earth contributed to its brightness and the large extent of its tails.
