The Flare and the Galaxy

NASA APOD · Martin Mark
COSMIC MESSAGE

This person isn't throwing a lightning bolt, but pointing at an Iridium flare. This is a momentary reflection of sunlight off a communications satellite in orbit. As the satellite moves, its reflective antennas align with the observer and the Sun, creating a flash brighter than any star. These flares last several seconds, longer than most meteors.
