Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity predicted gravitational lensing, which gives these distant galaxies their whimsical appearance. Nicknamed the Cheshire Cat galaxy group, two large elliptical galaxies are framed by arcs. These arcs are images of distant background galaxies, their light bent by the gravity of the closer galaxy group.
