NGC 6872: A Stretched Spiral Galaxy
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
NGC 6872, also known as the Condor galaxy, is one of the most elongated barred spiral galaxies, stretching over 700,000 light-years. Its stretched shape is likely due to an ongoing collision with the smaller galaxy IC 4970, visible just above its center. The galaxy's upper left spiral arm shows an unusual amount of blue star-forming regions.
