Fifty years ago, on June 2, 1966, Surveyor 1 became the first US spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on the Moon. This image shows the shadow cast by the lander on the lunar surface. Surveyor 1 sent back over 10,000 images, testing the terrain for the upcoming Apollo missions.
