NGC 2442 is a distorted spiral galaxy in the constellation Volans, about 50 million light-years away. Its two spiral arms extend from a central bar, giving it a hook-like appearance. This detailed close-up, a mosaic of data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the European Southern Observatory, shows obscuring dust lanes, young blue star clusters, and reddish star-forming regions.
