COSMIC MESSAGE

The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, is a pair of interacting galaxies about 23 million light-years away. The larger spiral galaxy, NGC 5194, is pulling at its companion, NGC 5195, distorting its shape. Its spiral arms and dust lanes are clearly visible, sweeping in front of the smaller galaxy.
