COSMIC MESSAGE

RS Puppis, the brightest star in the image center, is about ten times more massive than our Sun. It is a Cepheid variable star, a class whose brightness helps estimate distances to nearby galaxies. As RS Pup pulsates over about 40 days, its regular changes in brightness are also seen in its surrounding nebula. These changes are delayed in time, creating light echoes.
