Hoag's Object: A Nearly Perfect Ring Galaxy

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Hoag's Object is an unusual galaxy, discovered in 1950 by astronomer Arthur Hoag. It looks like a ring of bright blue stars surrounding a ball of older, redder stars, with a dark gap in between. This strange, nearly perfect ring galaxy is about 600 million light-years away. How it formed, and why it has such a distinct ring, is still a mystery to astronomers.
