A Lunar Corona over Paris

Why does a cloudy moon sometimes appear colorful? This effect, called a lunar corona, is caused by the diffraction of light. Light bends around individual, similarly-sized water droplets in a mostly transparent cloud. Since different colors of light have different wavelengths, each color diffracts differently, creating the colorful rings.
