Stellar Streams in the Local Universe
These twenty galaxies are part of an astronomical survey of tidal stellar streams. Each panel shows a composite, inverted image from publicly available surveys, revealing faint cosmic structures. These star streams, hundreds of thousands of light-years across, are formed by the gravitational disruption of satellite galaxies. They represent the ongoing mergers of galaxies in the local universe.
