NGC 1499: The California Nebula

COSMIC MESSAGE
The California Nebula, NGC 1499, is a molecular cloud that echoes the outline of the state of California. This emission nebula is about 100 light years long and sits 1,000 light years from us in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way. Its prominent glow comes from hydrogen atoms recombining, emitting red light.
