LMC X-1: A Black Hole Candidate

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

LMC X-1 is the strongest X-ray source in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is a binary system where a normal star orbits a compact object. Gas from the normal star falls onto the compact object, heats up, and emits X-rays. These X-rays ionize surrounding gas, causing it to glow, making the system detectable for light years around.
