Tempel-Tuttle: The Leonid Comet

NASA APOD · T. Puckett (Puckett Observatory)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Leonid Comet, Tempel-Tuttle, orbits the Sun every 33 years. This composite time exposure captures its unexpected brightening in January 1998, as star trails streak the background. The comet is famous for producing the annual Leonid meteor shower when Earth crosses its dusty path. Binoculars or a small telescope were still needed to see it visually.
