ROSAT Explores The X-Ray Sky

Launched in 1990, the ROSAT observatory mapped the entire sky in X-rays, light with about a thousand times more energy than visible light. This image shows the sharpest, most sensitive X-ray view of the sky to date, with our Milky Way Galaxy running horizontally through the center. Different colors indicate various X-ray energy ranges.
