Saturn's rings are a spectacular sight, but the Hubble Space Telescope's STIS instrument captured another kind of ring: ultraviolet aurora around the poles. These auroral displays extend more than 1,000 miles above the cloud tops. Like Earth's aurora, they are caused by energetic charged particles from the solar wind, funneled by the planet's magnetic field into the atmosphere.
