COSMIC MESSAGE

This image of the Mir space station was taken by astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis during the STS-76 mission. Mir orbited about 350 kilometers above Earth, here seen over New Zealand's South Island. The station's solar panels and modules gave it a distinctive, almost insect-like appearance. Atlantis docked with Mir to transfer astronaut Shannon W. Lucid for a five-month stay.
